Hey y’all! It’s Halloween and these ghosts and goblins got me thinking. Mostly about fear – how we can use it to paralyze us or propel us forward.
I remember when our son [Divine] was about 3 years old, and my family and I went to the Halloween store to look for costumes. We’d been browsing for a short time when we stumbled upon an area of the store with the most elaborate and graphic display I’d ever seen. Talk about detailed and realistic looking! Like a “DREXTER’ (my term for those who simultaneously drive and text) avoiding a collision, Divine came to a screeching halt. A complete stop. It was almost as if he was paralyzed by what he’d just seen, and he literally wouldn’t move an inch until I bent down to pick him up and reassure him mommy would eat the monsters before she’d let the monsters eat him, and it was okay because they weren’t real.
Following that, we immediately left the store.
In thinking about that moment with Divine, I thought about how we [as adults] often allow fear to paralyze us in the same way. We allow fear to stop us from doing the very thing we say we want to do. Whether we fear failure or success, judgement and ridicule or shame, or simply just not getting it ‘right/perfect.’ Whatever the underlying thing is, too often it’s given room to plant itself and grow to the point that we become stuck – stagnant by our own anxiety, keeping us from moving forward in the direction we need to reach the very goal that’s going to propel us to the next level of our desires. So, instead, we stand watching safely from the sidelines in our comfort zone waving at those who dared to follow their dreams and do the things that are in their heart, not realizing those same people have fears too.
I’ve had my challenges with this in the past and still have moments when I must remind myself to keep moving forward. What I know that I know is doing the very thing I fear most has resulted in some of the most powerful outcomes of being catapulted to the next level of my desires.
I want to remind every person who’s reading this to Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway! Don’t let it paralyze you! It’s inevitable that you’re going to feel the fear whenever you’re walking into the unknown because it’s something you’ve never done before. That’s to be expected; it’s a natural human response. Even if you have done it before, there’s still something about the experience that makes it new. The trick isn’t being fearless but rather moving through the anxiety and doing the very thing you fear, allowing it to propel you. After all, how will you ever uncover or discover what you could have created and manifested because you moved beyond the fear into the thing you truly desired?
So, that’s my monthly tip to you: Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway!
